Recommended Reading from the Strike Bookshelf

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
~ Richard Steele ~

We're all avid readers at Strike International and believe that learning is a never-ending process.  Law enforcement and military personnel do themselves an injustice if they do not keep up on the latest thoughts and ideas regarding tactics, training and leadership.  It is also imperative that we stay current on the turbulent, ever-changing world we live in. Remember, the world is smaller now.  We are effected equally by events that happen here as well as on the other side of our globe, whether those events happened today, last year or a thousand years ago.  So, when you're not attending the "Officer Safety and Survival" school or when you're not practicing the techniques you learned in our "Dynamic Entry" school - pick up one of these books and learn something while you wind down...

Never Surrender: A Soldier's Journey to the Crossroads of Faith and Freedom by Lt. Gen. William Boykin. For the men and women who have served their Nation in uniform it is a must read!

The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle - Learning the concept of "training deep" and the "primeval cue."

The Mission the Men and Me by Pete Blaber.  Former Delta Force Operator who provides the keys to success in operational planning and decision-making, and great insight into mission execution.

American Generalship-Character is Everything: the Art of Command by Edgar F. Puryear, Jr. - A great new book by Edgar F. Puryear, Jr., that focuses on the measure of "character" and the relationship it plays in the art of command and leadership.  More importantly it takes the time to break down and define what "character" is through documented examples of great commanders who have served our Nation's military.  It is a must book for anyone who is serious about leadership and the responsibility that comes with the art of command.

Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales - This book illuminates the challenges and mysteries of survival and pointedly takes you down into the depths of fear.  More importantly, it teaches you how to rise above and manage fear so that it doesn't become physically debilitating.

Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield - An epic novel about warriorism.  To quote Col David Hackworth, "...the secrets of developing the critical warrior ethic and what combat leadership, discipline, superior training techniques and the brotherhood of arms are all about."  It is, without a doubt, one of the best researched books on Spartan life and the battle of Thermopylae written to date.

Trigger Men by Hans Halberstadt.  A journey inside the little-known world of US military snipers.

Joker One by Donovan Campbell.  The true story of one platoon from the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, and their commitment to courage, leadership, and brotherhood, during the battle of Ramadi, Iraq.  This is an outstanding read! (Jack)

Kill Bin Laden by Dalton Fury, Forward by Col. David Hunt who states, "Mr. President, if you had let these guys run this war, it would have been over by now."  This is the true story of Delta's mission to get Bin Laden and what really happened at Tora Bora.

Surgical Speed Shooting by Andy Stafford.  How to achieve high speed marksmanship in a gunfight!

Warriors...In Their Own Words by The LOOC Foundation - This book is dedicated to the American Warrior and proceeds from this book go to aid wounded service men and women, and their families. A great cause and an excellent book.  You can find out more at www.looc.org.

Imperial Grunts by Robert D. Kaplan - The American military on the ground.

The Eve of Destruction: The Untold Story of the Yom Kippur War  by Howard Blum

The Military and Police Sniper: Advanced Precision Shooting for Combat and Law Enforcement by Mike R. Lau

We Were One by Patrick K. O'Donnel - The battle of Fallujah.

Not a Good Day to Die by Sean Naylor - National bestseller concerning the incident on Robert's Ridge in the Shahikot Valley, Afghanistan during Operation Anaconda.

Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden - The 1993 incident in Mogadishu Somalia, involving US Special Forces.

Leadership and Training for the Fight: A Few Thoughts on Leadership and Training from a Former Special Operations Soldier  by MSG. Paul R. Howe

On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

Warfighting: The U. S. Marine Corps Book on Strategy by Gen. A. M. Gray, Joyce L. Vedral and

Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness by Robert Greenleaf

Small Unit Leadership: A Commonsense Approach by Col. Dandridge Malone

There are some excellent current authors and plenty of other books to mention here, but we will keep the list short for now.  We will add to the bookshelf as time goes on and if you have read  a currently available book that you would like to suggest please don't hesitate to contact us.  We may or may not add it to the list as our standards are pretty high! But we will definitely consider your suggestion.
