Tactical Patrol Rifle Instructor Course

Denton County Sheriff's Office Range Facility

AA Report - November 17-21, 2008

by Strike International

The quality and experience of individuals that attended the Tactical Patrol Rifle Instructor Course held at the Denton County Sheriff's range facility was nothing less than outstanding! We asked the students to give us five days of mental and physical focus and we were not disappointed.  Additionally, as the class was broken down into their Strike Bravo Teams, that same intensity carried over as each team conducted their classroom presentation and live-fire drills.  George and I always look for, and appreciate, good teamwork and leadership that is balanced with equal shared responsibility.  In that regard all performed well and it reflected in the quality of work each team put out.

WEATHER:

The weather for this school was nothing less than incredible!  We started off each morning with a slight chill but it quickly gave way to the mid 60's or lower 70's and we had crystal clear blue skies and only a slight breeze for the week.  As I said, it was perfect.  Days on the range like this don't get any better!

TACTICAL LOW LIGHT:

The tactical low light day - (coming in at 5:00 AM) - gave us time to review some low light rifle techniques and get a good hour and a half of shooting in the dark before transitional light took effect.  Most officers never seem to get enough of this type of training so we fit it in to each of our instructional courses.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

Weapon systems and tactical gear performed well with very few problems.  The one single piece of equipment that seemed to effect a few individual rifles, were bad magazines!  Remember:  once a magazine goes bad don't hang on to it...GET RID OF IT!

SKILLS AND SAFETY PROTOCOL:

The rifle instructor course was not easy nor was it overly difficult.  We like to term it as "challenging."  All did well on the three different qualification courses we fired as well as the skills testing portion which indicated that everyone had solid fundamental weapon handling skills.  Above anything else, George and I appreciated the deep commitment by everyone to SAFETY PROTOCOLS - both in the classroom and on the range line.  Thank you gentlemen!

CONCLUSION:

Finally, it goes without saying how much we appreciated Denton County Range Master Don Stewart for all his help with the daily range setup and the use of their house for the week.  The Denton County Sheriff's Office has always extended themselves to us as well as being a gracious host agency when we have conducted school there.  We truly appreciate it.

Overall, it was a steady week of hard work, a lot of shooting, and great interaction between the Bravo teams.  The main impetus of this course was to increase the student's overall knowledge and skills so that they, as instructors, can take the course back to each agency and design a program to meet its own mission needs.  Remember, always seek "Excellence in Standards and Expectations" and "Excellence in Purpose and Principles" in the programs you develop and within your own personal self so that you may pass it on to others.
