The Strike Report - July 2008

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

"Americans have been cradled in the fullness of liberty.  This can only be possible because in each generation warriors have stood watch, joined the battle, and defeated all who would challenge our precious freedom."    ~ Colonel, James D. McGinley - USMC

Learning and Applying:  The Three Knows!

Know the Weapon

Know Yourself

Know the Legal Parameters and Use of Deadly Force Policies

KNOW THE WEAPON

  • Weapon Functioning - Make and model / SA / DA / or both / solid understanding of nomenclature / loading devices and how they work with the weapon.

  • Capabilities - Each weapon is different.  A shooter should have a thorough working knowledge and understanding of the weapon they are carrying.  There should be a comfort zone with the weapon and a respectful familiarity.  Consider the types of safety devices / trigger pull / sights / magazine or cylinder releases / decocking lever (if equipped).  Knowing any other peculiarities that the weapon may have.  You should be able to effectively utilize it with a proficient confidence.

  • Ammunition - Make sure you are carrying the best possible ammunition for the weapon (no reloads).  Design of cartridges and corresponding bullet performances will vary with the different manufacturers.  Quality control can be an issue.  Go with a proven factory ammunition.

  • Maintenance - Maintenance is a critical function!  Whether it appears to need it or not, clean and lubricate the weapon at least once a month.  It should also be cleaned each time after you have shot it.  After cleaning, make sure you function check it!

KNOW YOURSELF

  • Physical - You should have an awareness of your natural physical abilities.  As much as it is stressed to maintain your weapon, it is equally as important to maintain the health of your body.  Additionally, it is important to recognize how your body responds to physiological changes, which occur under intense stressful situations.  *Accelerated heart rate, adrenaline rush, audio exclusion, and visual exclusion are a few examples.*

  • Mental - Above anything else, this is the most powerful tool an officer can have when it comes to his or her survival.  The officer that can develop and sustain mental focus through a deadly force confrontation will more than likely survive the ordeal.  It gives them the fighting edge to endure, to channel their mind to a single point...WINNING!  That is, to survive and win at all cost, no matter what the injury is, the pain you are suffering or the numbers against you.  It is the single greatest survival factor for an officer!

  • Strengths, Weaknesses and Limitations - To know yourself is to recognize these three factors and how they can impact you.  More importantly, it is knowing the effects they can have on you in a serious confrontation.  Everyone's perception and reactionary response is different, so learn what you can about yourself and apply it to your advantage.

KNOW THE LEGAL PARAMETERS AND USE OF DEADLY FORCE POLICIES

  • It is incumbent upon the individual officer, as well as agency instructors, to have a thorough working knowledge of your Federal or State laws, Standard Operating Policies, General Orders and Use of Force policies.

  • YOUR OWN AGENCY MAY BE MORE RESTRICTIVE IN SOME AREAS!

  • Remember, United States law enforcement is not the military under combat situations.  We are governed and regulated much tighter when it comes to use of force.  Know where you stand!
