The Strike Report - July 2011
“Combat power is the total destructive force we can bring to bear on the enemy at a given time." ~ USMC Gen. AM Gray
AFTER ACTION REPORT
PATROL RIFLE INSTRUCTOR COURSE
DATE AND LOCATION: June 13-17, 2011, at the Denton County Sheriff's Office Range Facility, Denton County, Texas.
TRAINING COURSE: Patrol Rifle Instructor Course
INSTRUCTORS: Primary Instructors were - Jack C. Perritt / George F. Wiley Associate Instructors who participated were - Charles Johnson from Cooke County SO and Bobby Doyal of HVPD
NUMBER OF STUDENTS: Of the original sixteen students who signed up to attend, fourteen (14) students participated and completed the course successfully.
TRAINING TIME: 0800 - 1700 hrs.
WX: Clear skies / moderate winds / and extremely hot. Recorded temperatures on Denton's asphalt deck ranged from 101 to 113 on Day 3. Hydration and plenty of breaks were essential.
AAR NARRATIVE: Day-1 the class began with introductions and administrative paperwork as well as safety protocols. The class was then divided into their two main working groups - ALPHA / BRAVO and these were further subdivided into Alpha and Bravo teams with a team leader selected for each. When we do these schools we like to include instructor responsibility and leadership skills.
Classroom portion began with an orientation to the work manual / administrative policy and start up / nomenclature / shooting principles and fundamentals / and finished up with instructional dynamics. On Day-2 and Day-3 additional morning classes were held covering such topics as "rifle tactics" and "tactical low-light."
LIVE FIRE: The live fire work began on the afternoon of Day-1 with students ensuring proper zero of their weapon (iron sights) at 100 yards. Most individuals managed to get their weapons properly zeroed with a few who needed a little more time. Day-2 allowed for a little more zero time on iron sights and then checking the zero on those that had RDS.
Overall this was a great group of experienced shooters. We had fourteen students who represented seven different agencies participating in this school. By Day-3 we had everyone passed on their qualifications and ready for the Skills Test on Day-4. The heat was a factor as the range at the Denton S.O. facility has an asphalt deck. At one point in the afternoon the temperature soared to 113 degrees! The good news is we had some hard-core individuals that were there to train. No one whined and each shooter dug down a little more to get things done as needed. We took plenty of breaks to get everyone hydrated up and some rest but there was a lot of ground to cover.
On Day-4 we came in late and immediately got into the Skills Test, which everyone completed successfully. A variety of advance rifle drills were ran through during the transitional light time and then it was time for some serious low light work. Shooters worked with their primary light systems as well as back-up tactical flashlights to simulate main light systems going down.
Day-5 began with the individual Alpha and Bravo teams doing their classroom presentations, grading the final exam, and then each team was required to set up their live-fire drill.
I wish to highly commend the two associate instructors invited to assist in this school: Bobby Doyal of the Highland Village Police Department and Charles Johnson of the Cooke County Sheriff's Office. I want to thank you gentlemen for your work ethics, your professionalism, and due diligence in seeing that we completed our mission successfully, and that mission was to safely and effectively get our students certified to be proficient instructors with the patrol rifle. Thank you again.
Finally, I must extend my deepest respect and regards to Don Stewart, the range master at the Denton County facility. Thank you so much, Don, for all you do and for making our time out there so enjoyable. To the students who participated...thanks for your intensity, mental focus, and for just being tough in dealing with the heat. I hope to see all of you at another SI school. Outstanding job gentlemen!

The focus and intensity on the faces of these students is duly noted and appreciated!
For those of you who signed up for the course and couldn't make it, you missed not only a great school, but the opportunity to work with some outstanding instructors from other agencies. The class had officers from at least seven different agencies represented. Strike will be back some time in January of 2012 to conduct another one.
An advance team tactic drill around barrels in transitional light. At dark the students were working with weapon light systems and shooting from 50 yards to 7 yards.
Victory is measured by the courage of action and the determination to win! Strike International
JULY 4TH
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." John Stewart Mill
Let us always remember and remember with reverent thought, the sacrifices so many men and women made on our behalf in order to establish on this good Earth a mighty nation conceived in liberty and led by the word of God. Amen
As stated by General George Washington, "Remember officers and soldiers that you are free men, fighting for the blessings of liberty."
Be safe and have a great 4th of July Holiday!
Jack C. Perritt Executive Director Strike International
